La Fleur’s: A Sneak Peek into OLG’s Retail Transformation

OLG is on a mission to create vibrant retail environments that enhance the player experience with localized lottery content and targeted promotions. To accomplish this, OLG has partnered with Carmanah Signs to deploy digital displays throughout their retailer network.

Currently, all 10,000 OLG retailers have Customer Display Units, which are screens near the lottery terminal that display prize information, jackpot amounts, promotional messages, and Watch ‘N Win games. But OLG wanted to innovate further. La Fleur’s Magazine recently interviewed Vanessa Theoret, OLG’s Senior Director of Retail Sales & Account Management, to discuss how OLG is modernizing the lottery brand at retail.

In partnership with Carmanah, the lottery has so far equipped 400 stores with Digital Menu Boards and 400 stores with Digital Playstands—a number expected to grow to an additional 500 locations within the current fiscal year. OLG chose which displays would be best for specific retailers based on traffic flow, location, and revenue-generating potential. Digital Menu Boards found success in various locations, including Circle K, CNIB Kiosks in Walmart stores, Avondale, and various independent stores.

“The Digital Menu Boards are the most likely to be seen and to have the greatest impact on purchase,” says Vanessa Theoret, Senior Director of Retail Sales & Account Management at OLG. She also believes Digital Playstands are a natural addition to the portfolio, stating: “Playstands are iconic for the lottery and benefit from thousands of visits by players annually. It’s a valuable opportunity to increase cross-play across all types of stores and channels using these units.”

In the coming months, OLG is working with Carmanah to add Digital Backer Shields at 130 stores. These Digital Backer Shields, featuring 15.6” LINQ commercial-grade tablets, will be strategically placed in front of lottery terminals at the point of purchase to maximize visibility and impact. Next year, OLG will also add 1,400 Self-Service Terminals to further increase their digital footprint.

“Every lottery needs to include Digital Transformation as part of its enterprise strategy,” Theoret concludes. “With rapidly changing technologies and customer shopping preferences, the focus and importance of digital opportunities for lotteries must remain a key priority for years to come.”
